My sophomore year of high school was when my eyes really started to open to the wide variety of amazing music outside the mainstream. There were two kids a year older than me, Jeff Hefler and Andrew Gartrell, who both would hand me endless stacks of obscure records and CDs to go home and consume, which led me away from the crappy pop-punk I was listening to and into greener pastures inhabited by the bands I still enjoy today.
